In this lab, we learned about the structure and function of enzymes and how they react to an acid combining with them. When the acid was added to the catalase reaction, the reaction stopped, meaning the enzyme denatured. We learned about the catalytic capabilities of enzymes in biochemical reactions. The denaturing of the enzymes by the acid causes its active site to no longer fit into the substrate, and thus the reaction stops.
Conclusion- We did this lab to learn about the function of enzymes. Each enzyme has a unique structure, giving it its unique function, similar to the concept of a "lock and key." Enzymes work to help move thing into and out of cells at a quicker rate, thus increasing the rate of reaction.
The rates of the reactions were highest from 0-10 and lowest from 180-360.
Yes the results were valid. The rates should be highest at the start and lowest at the end because there is more H2O2 present at the start, making it easier to get a reaction.
Denaturing- the process in which proteins or nucleic acids lose their tertiary structure and secondary structure by application of some external stress or compound. If proteins in a living cell are denatured, it will result in disruption of cell activity and possibly cell death.
